In 1972, Richard Branson signed an unknown folk musician named Mike Oldfield to his new company Virgin Records. Oldfield’s was an odd instrumental album called “Tubular Bells” that ended up selling millions of copies and launching Virgin’s rise to one of the most successful independent labels of all time. They eventually signed the Sex Pistols, the Rolling Stones, Culture Club, Human League, Janet Jackson and Peter Gabriel.

Now that his brand has spanned nearly 400 companies - including Virgin Airlines, Virgin Mobile and even Virgin Brides - Branson has become a billionaire many times over. He has risked his life in self promotional balloon trips, is working on descending 36,000 feet below the ocean’s surface, and plans to take his mother into space. We hung out with him for a day for Bloomberg Game Changers and he told us about the long, wild journey.
